City prosecutors have filed assault and drug-possession charges against the man accused of running over two pedestrians Wednesday while fleeing police after a botched drug deal.
Hasan Abernathy, 22, of the 1000 block of Renfrew Drive in north St. Louis County, is being held at the St. Louis Justice Center on $100,000 bail.
One of the pedestrians, a 28-year-old woman, remains in critical condition. The other, a 50-year-old man, has been released from a hospital.
Police said an officer spotted Mr. Abernathy in a Pontiac making a drug deal at a Mobil station at Goodfellow Boulevard and Natural Bridge Road.
When Mr. Abernathy backed his car over the pedestrians attempting to escape then slammed into a cement lightpole, which toppled over and crashed across the eastbound lanes of Natural Bridge Road.
The woman was trapped beneath the car, and witnesses told police that Abernathy nearly ran over her again in an attempt to escape, police said.
Several officers yanked him from the car and found marijuana on him.
