The Rev. Johnnie Scott, president of the East St. Louis branch of the NAACP, was hit by a motorcycle Friday evening, seconds after stepping from a curb near Officer Funeral Home.
Scott and the motorcycle driver were rushed to Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis.
Police Chief James Mister said Scott suffered a head injury, but no information was available Friday night on his condition.
Witnesses said the motorcycle driver appeared to have been seriously injured.
Scott had suffered fractures to vertebrae in his neck and was transferred Friday night to St. Louis University Hospital, said Cedric Taylor, a close friend.
Illinois State Police were investigating the accident.
The accident occurred about 6:15 p.m. The motorcycle driver was traveling east on Missouri Avenue and struck Scott as he was leaving the funeral home, 2114 Missouri Avenue.
