A man suspected of driving the vehicle that fatally struck a 6-year-old boy who had just stepped off a school bus turned himself into authorities Saturday, February 11, city police said.
Richard Wilkes, a spokesman for the St. Louis police department said that the suspect, 27, was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.
He said the suspect turned himself in about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Wilkes did not provide additional information.
The accident happened when Aaron Woodson, a first-grader at Cole Elementary School in St. Louis, was trying to cross Whittier Street, a half-block north of Page Boulevard, after stepping off his school bus.
A late model pickup hit him and killed him on Friday afternoon. The driver of the pickup fled from the scene.
Police had earlier said that the truck's driver ignored flashing warning lights and a stop sign extended on an arm from the driver's side of the bus.
